Mary Ruth Vassallo-Joseph

Hi there. My name is Mary Ruth Vassallo-Joseph. I am a Registered Nurse with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia. I hold a BSc. in Nursing from Dalhousie University. I have been a practicing RN for 14 years. I also hold a certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing from the Canadian Nurses Association. I have been a mental health advocate for 23 years, and I bring a first voice perspective to my advocacy. I have served as a community consumer representative on the Mental Health Review Board in Halifax, NS, as well as a committee member on the Youth Mental Health Advisory Board at the IWK in Halifax. I was the founder of Invisible Illness Halifax and ran a successful support group for a few years until I left that city.

At this time, I have assumed the leadership of the Cape Breton Mental Health Support Group and act as a co-leader and facilitator of that group. I am employed by the Nova Scotia Health Authority as a Home Consultant RN for palliative care services. I am involved locally in the Nova Scotia Nurses union as a shop steward for my area of practice. I support nurses in the navigation of some different workplace situations. I am a lifelong learner and am passionate about mental health and wellness with a particular focus on how mental health status and availability of coping mechanisms assists people in dealing with life limiting illnesses. Also quality of workplace supports and workplace/union interventions to assist professionals dealing with mental health difficulties/burnout, compassion fatigue and how workplace stress, violence, and bullying lead to mental health difficulties and what can be done to prevent these things from occurring.

Worth Living is a perfect fit to the mission and goals of my life including inspiring, advocating, educating, motivating and offering solutions, ideas, and opportunities to lead a life ‘Worth Living’

Going forward, I am working toward obtaining Masters level training in counselling/therapy and hope to be enrolled inside this calendar year.
